Literacy

At Purple Willows, our literacy development involves encouraging your child to link sounds and letters as well as beginning to read and write. All children have full access to a wide range of reading materials involving books, poems, and other printed materials to explore their interest.

Purple Willows will take into consideration your child's needs, interest and their stage of development so that we can plan a challenging and enjoyable experience properly for their learning and development. Where a child may have a particular educational need or disability which requires specialist support, we will assist the child’s parents and carers to ensure they have access to the relevant or appropriate services.

For children whose home language is not English, Purple Willows will take reasonable steps to provide opportunities for your child to develop and use their home language in play and learning, supporting their language development at home.

Purple Willows will also ensure that your child has sufficient opportunities to learn and reach a reasonable standard in English language ensuring they are ready to benefit from the opportunities available to them when they begin Year 1.

Purple Willows will assess your child’s skills in English as part of our communication and development approach. If your child does not have a firm grasp of the English language, we will explore the child’s skills in the home language with parents and carers, to establish whether there is cause for concern about language delay.
